Division Licensing Exams
Frequently Asked Questions
The Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) partners with Prov Exams to administer state licensing exams. To register for an exam, please visit the Prov Scheduler Landing Page.
Before registering, we recommend visiting the DOPL profession page specific to your license classification to confirm you meet all testing requirements.
Part of the exam onboarding process will be to provide documentation of your identity. Your documentation will need to be government issued, active and include a photo.
- These include a state photo ID card, driver's license, military ID, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service Employment Authorization Card, trusted traveler cards, border-crossing cards, Native American tribal ID cards, and airline or airport photo ID card.
- They may also include a U.S. passport or passport card, Permanent Resident Card, or Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-551). A foreign passport with a temporary I-551 stamp or printed notation on a machine-readable immigrant visa may also be acceptable.
Things to avoid
- Name Inconsistencies: Your ID must be a match the name you provided on your exam registration. If they are different, you will not be permitted to test and you will forfeit your exam fee.
- Expired Documentation: Your ID must be valid. You will not be permitted to test and you will forfeit your exam fee if you present to the onboarding agent with expired ID.
The only exception to either of these rules is if you present documentation indicating why the name is different or documentation that you have renewed the document. Proof of the change must accompany the picture ID provided.
Licensing exams can be taken at any of the following testing environments. Check your Examination Handbook for specific locations for your type of exam:
- College Testing Center
- Prov Testing Center
- From your home or a secluded work room away from all other people with a closed door.

What to Bring:
- Open Book References: Most of the division's examinations are "open book" exams. What this means is that you may bring any of the references listed in the examination handbook that directly follow the exam's content outline. There are specific requirements for bringing in reference material so be sure to read the last page of the examination handbook for these details.
- Picture ID: You will be requested to provide active, government issued, picture ID that matches the name on your registration. Please note, this is a strictly enforced policy.
- Scratch Paper: In a live testing center, paper and pencil will be provide at check in. When testing from home you may bring your own. In either instance, the proctor will ask you to destroy the paper at the end of the exam.
- Materials: In the case of a practical exam, there may be a requirement for you to provide pre-selected materials. These materials can be found in the Examination Handbook. All materials will be verified at the time of checking in to your exam session.
What Not To Bring
- Anything that is not defined in the examination handbook.
- Calculators: For exams that require a calculator, Prov has built a scientific calculator inside the testing platform.
- Cellphones: When testing from home, your phone will be used to do a room sweep. After that is complete, the phone must be placed out of reach and in site of the proctor. For those testing in a in-person testing center, phones are strictly prohibited.
In most instances exam scores are sent to you within moments of finishing the exam. If you are taking a practical exam, it could be 3-4 business days before your results are sent out.
Scores will be delivered directly to your registered email address. It is very important that you use the same email for your exam as you do to apply for a license. Otherwise scores will not sync up and it may cost you a delay in processing or possibly a denial of licensure.
You can reference the division policies on exam administration from the Laws and Rules site on this page. You can also find our vendor's testing policies in the Examination Handbook for your profession.
Candidates are expected to adhere to these policies during and after their testing session.
