Scammers Threatening Licensees Using Spoofed Numbers and Authentic-Looking Letters

The Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) has recently received reports that scammers are spoofing official DOPL phone numbers and sending fraudulent letters to licensees, threatening suspension or revocation of their license if they do not comply with demands.

DOPL first received reports that scammers were targeting nurses, specifically. However, new reports indicate the scammers are targeting other licensed professionals in Utah and show no indication of stopping.

The scammers reportedly call the licensee first and then follow up with a letter claiming the professional's license would be suspended for alleged criminal or unprofessional activity. The scammers demand immediate payment for a "fine" in order for the professional to avoid a license suspension.

This letter is especially concerning because it carries the DOPL logo, the official state seal, and the agency’s contact information. The letters will also often feature detailed information about the licensee, such as their name and license number.

DOPL communicates with licensees several times before suspending or revoking a license. It is never a surprise.

What should you do if you receive a concerning call or letter that appears to be from DOPL?

Hang up the phone immediately. To verify the caller's claims and/or the letter's authenticity, call DOPL directly at 801-530-6628 or email doploutreach@utah.gov.

Scam Advisory for Medical Professionals

The Salt Lake City Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit has informed the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) about an imposter scam that appears to be targeting professionals working in medical fields.

The scammers allegedly spoof the phone numbers of law enforcement agencies, calling potential victims and claiming to have a warrant out for their arrest. In some cases, the scammers appear to have limited personal information about their potential victims, claiming they've sent or tried to serve a subpoena at a previous or current address. The scammers will then instruct the victim to buy various gift cards from different locations and to provide the scammers with the numbers on the back.

As a reminder, law enforcement will never contact you to collect on a warrant over the phone. If you encounter one of these scams, you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

DOPL Moving to Electronic-Only Renewal Notifications

ALSO: UPDATE YOUR EMAIL SETTINGS to allow all email correspondence from StateOfUtahCommerceLicensing@Utah.gov. You may have already received correspondence from this address, as DOPL has been emailing license renewal notifications for the last few years.

FAQs about DOPL's Renewal Postcard Discontinuation

DOPL is forever looking for ways to create a more efficient use of taxpayer dollars. In 2021, mailing postcard renewal reminders cost taxpayers $88,000.
Approximately 98% of all DOPL licensees already renew online. This makes postcard renewal reminders unnecessarily expensive and inefficient.
Emailed renewal reminders are already so successful that many licensees renew even before DOPL mails off the postcards. Additionally, a substantial number of postcards are undeliverable due to incorrect address or other issues.
Licensees tell us that online renewals are much easier. They require less steps, and are much more efficient. Also, because DOPL sends official licenses via email, licensees can receive their renewed license in as little as 24 hours after DOPL approval.
The State of Utah is steadily moving toward a greener platform, which includes moving to paperless processes.
Technological advancements now allow much more efficient reminders than getting a postcard. For example, since most licenses expire the same day every 2 years, many DOPL licensees set a calendar event, phone alarm, or digital reminder to repeat every other year.

You can look up your license number using DOPL’s free online Verify a License Tool. On the dopl.utah.gov home page, click on “Verify a License”. On this page, type your own name in the search bar and then click “Search”. Select your name from the list by clicking on your name or license number. The resulting page will have your professional license information, including your name, profession, license number, license expiration date, etc.

Update your email settings now to ensure renewal reminders don’t end up in a spam or junk folder. Go into your email settings and allow email correspondence from StateOfUtahCommerceLicensing@Utah.gov. This process may take you a few minutes, but will only need to be done once to ensure you receive emails from DOPL.

If you are not sure how to do this, use a search engine and type in “How to whitelist an email in [insert the name of your email provider here],” then follow those steps.

Suspended License Scam

The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) has received reports of fraudulent calls and emailed letters informing licensees that their license has been suspended. See "Suspended License Scam Letter " issued February 22, 2022 for further details about this scam.

Fingerprinting services are by appointment only

Fingerprinting at the Division is offered from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Heber Wells Building by appointment only. DOPL offers fingerprinting services for avenues of licensure that require a fingerprint base background check for no additional charge.

Please visit the Division's Fingerprinting Services Page to make an appointment. Valid government issued ID (i.e. US Driver’s License, State ID, Passport or US Military ID) is required.
