Exam Information

Exam Fee Changes Coming Soon! (Posted April 29, 2022)

Effective May 16, 2022, the Utah Hearing Instrument Specialist Law and Rule exam fee will be increasing by $10. For questions or comments regarding this change, please contact doplexams@utah.gov.


There are two classifications of licensure for Hearing Instruments: Hearing Instrument Specialist and Hearing Instrument Intern. The examination requirements for each are listed below.

Hearing Instrument Intern

  • Utah Hearing Instrument Specialist Law and Rules Examination
    This exam is administered by the Divisions exam vendor, Prov. Inc. To register, please see the section below, "To Schedule an Exam with Prov".

    Note: In accordance with state statute 58-46a-302.5 , once you have received your intern license, you may begin working under direct supervision. To work toward indirect supervision, you will need to complete each of the following exams:

    • IHS Practical Examination for Hearing Instrument Specialists.
      This exam is administered by the Divisions exam vendor, Prov Inc. To register, please see the section below, "To Schedule an Exam with Prov".
    • IHS Distance Learning for Professionals Hearing Health Sciences Course.
      This course has an accompanying exam. For more information on this distance learning program, please visit the following site: IHS Distance Learning Course .

Once you have met the requirements working under indirect supervision, you will need to take one of the following examinations prior to applying for licensure as a Hearing Instrument Specialist.

  • NBC-HIS National Competency Exam (NCE)*
    You can request your examination application by submitting your inquiry to the following link: NCE Application Request
    *This examination is a requirement to becoming licensed as a Hearing Instrument Specialist.

  • Utah Hearing Instrument Specialists Law and Rule Examination *
    This examination is administered by the Divisions exam vendor, Prov Inc. To register, please see the section below, "To Schedule an Exam with Prov".
    *Not required if you previously submitted a passing score as an Intern.
  • NBC-HIS National Competency Exam (NCE)
    You can request your examination application by submitting your inquiry to the following link: NCE Application Request.

To Schedule an Exam with Prov:

  • Create an account at https://provexam.com/scheduler/ . You have the option to take this exam at most college and university testing centers in Utah and throughout the US.
  • Out-of-State Testing: Contact Prov directly to make testing arrangements. The phone number is 877-228-3926.
  • At-Home Testing: You also have the option of using an on-line proctoring test platform known as Examroom. To verify your computer equipment will run Examroom, please use this system check tool prior to registering for your exam: On-Line Proctoring System Check
  • For more information about this exam, please review the Examination Information Bulletins .
  • Electronic submission of exam results will be sent directly to DOPL from prov.
