Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Exam Information
There are three license classifications in Clinical Mental Health: Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor Extern.
Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC)
Each of the following exams will need to be completed one at a time as NBCC only allows one registration in the system per candidate.
- National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Exam (NCMHCE). The registration and administration of this exam is processed through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
- National Counselor Examination (NCE). The registration and administration of this exam is processed through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor (ACMHC)
If you are graduating in rehab counseling, the following exams are required. Otherwise, there is NOT an exam requirement for the ACMHC.

Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor Extern
There is NOT an examination requirement for this license classification.
