Exam Information

There are five Plumber license classifications in Utah: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman and Residential Master. The examinations required for each are listed below. Preapproval for testing is NOT required.

NOTE: Please do not submit your application for licensure until you have passed all required exams and have met all other licensing requirements.

Plumber Apprentice

There are no exam requirements for this classification.

Residential Journeyman Plumber

Testing Eligibility Requirements

6 semesters or the competency exam equivalence; and
6,000 hours of residential plumbing experience as a licensed apprentice plumber.

12,000 hours of residential plumbing experience as a licensed apprentice plumber.

Journeyman Plumber

Testing Eligibility Requirements

7 semesters or the competency exam equivalence; and
6,000 hours of plumbing experience as a licensed apprentice plumber.

16,000 hours of plumbing experience as a licensed apprentice plumber.

Examination Requirements

Utah Plumber Practical Exam

Residential Master Plumber

Test Eligibility Requirements:

Associate in Applied Science Degree; and
2,000 hours of supervisory plumbing experience as a licensed residential journeyman plumber.

4,000 hours of plumbing experience and 4,000 hours of supervisory plumbing experience as a licensed residential journeyman plumber.

Examination Requirements:

Utah Master Plumber Law and Rule Exam
Utah Plumber Practical Exam*

Master Plumber

Testing Eligibility Requirements:

Associate in Applied Science Degree
2,000 hours of supervisory plumbing experience as a licensed journeyman plumber.

4,000 hours of plumbing experience and 4,000 hours of supervisory plumbing experience as licensed journeyman plumber.
